A Hearty Kind of Day

I finially got back into my studio today. I has been three weeks. It was good to be back. I wanted to make some more Valentine's as mine have been selling well and I know that we will start to sell more quickly mid week and will need more.

I call this Princess with a heart. The piece framing it is from an old ledger page from 1907.

I like the heart and the green over a texture using molding paste and a stencil.

One idea that I had was to do valentine's using recylcled art. Mine and others. I had a lot of Misc pieces to work with. What I like to do is just put a pile of stuff infront of me and then go to town only using that media.

This is using an old ATC that I had made and printed copies of. Nikki Blackwell once said to add dots whenever you can't think of anything else to do. So it did. You can also use dots to integrate a piece or as a way to add rhythm.

This is an old french postcard. I just added the hearts and now it is a Valentine.

This was an 8.5 X 11 pice that I cut up. That's why the gingham border is just on 3 sides.

I love felting pieces for cards. They have been popular! The beading and embroidery make them rather sweet.

I made 3 cards out of this collaged piece. It had all kinds of different elements to it.

I made a Birth painting last year at this time working with owls. The baby's Mother was "convinced" that she was going to like Owls. I had carved a stamp that was heart shaped and felt it worked very well for the babies in a nest with a mother owl sitting it. These were tests I had worked on prototyping prior to begining the piece. I just cut them all out and made 3 cards--all three are different faces as I was playing.
It was a fun day and time just flew by....

My Space at Open Doors 2007

It's kind of interesting how things evolve through the years and the best place to look at that is through the eyes of the camera. Thankfully, we have some good photographers at PAC or I would have no chronicle of my shows.

This is a front shot of the space. I have a tendency to put too much on the walls. Is more better or is less better? After 3 shows, I have come to the conclusion that less is more and better.

Back view. Wasn't the light nice that day? It helps a lot.

Back view again.

Front side view.

I will be adding 08 and 09. Let me know what you like/dislike about each of them.

My Space at Open Doors 2008

Back card wall and card rack.
My first year of felted items. My table is all about that.
More cards and felting in back.
And more felting and my stenciled journals in back.

Front view with the table.
A closer look at the table and my felted pins.
Felted holly pins on a cupcake display piece.
The front.
The front and me.

My space at PAC Show 2009

The table in front with felted items and danglies.
Back door with little stuff. I guess you could say my space has a plethora of stuff and color!
Valentine's Day wall-the cards did very well.
Front table. This was taken early Friday and the table was very congested. Too congested.
Me up front.

Hope you have enjoyed looking at my spaces through the 3 years. This year my doors were tightened up closer together and it really made a difference on how much light I got and consequently the feel of the space. I have always been in the same spot in the gym. I plan to show less on the walls in 2010 and make my newness more special. It would also take a lot less effort to get it all there. That's the plan--if you're listening, hold me to it, because that's what I said last year.

Valentine's Day is almost here... Are YOU Ready?

I have been making Valentine's since I was a kid. I love making and giving them as much as I have loved getting them. I thought that I would show you some of the Valentine's I have made in the past year. They are all different and use different mediums. Which do you like best?

What is it about a Valentine that we all find so mesmerizing?

Is it the mystery of who might give us one?

Is it the heart itself?

Is it love?

Is it lust?

Is it the excitement of the chase?

Or the consumation of the chase?

Is it knowing that there is someone out there that is special to us?

Or someone out there who finds us special?

Is it about attraction?

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Can you resist a flirt?

Don't you just love a heartfelt glance?

Valentine's Day meakes me so aware that I have been missing that someone special in my life. Am I making beaucoup Valentine's as a shrine to he who will come? If you build it he will come? You tell me... I hope so...

What made me HAPPY WEEK 2

This is My favorite cat, Buster. He doesn't like to be held but will lay up against me when watching TV (if there is room!) Isn't he handsome?
I think I will start calling this a happiness/gratitude weekly check-in.

Becoming more cognizant of simple things that make one happy or for which one is grateful is a good lesson in "living off the fat of the land." This is one of my pet phrases that I like to use. In this case, it refers to finding happiness in doing things that don't cost money--finding happiness in just living and in feelings of abundance and wealth when one is not monetarily rich. I want to be rich in simple happiness and richly surrounded by love and companionship from friends and family. This love you can't buy--it's just here. It's simple abundance.

Monday: It was hard to be happy today. I can honestly say I wasn't. I started off the day with an early phone call from my Supervisor at work who informed me that there was some controversy surrounding the Board decision allowing me to sell my art/cards in the store. I have to tell you I am disheartened. When they offered me this perk, I was very happy. A little later in the morning, I got a call from a very good, old friend who told me that his wife had passed away a week ago. She had had cancer the past 3 years. I am stunned and saddened. How do you help someone you love through this gracefully?

Tonight, I decided that I needed to make an attempt toward happiness so I took a hot, leisurely bath in the dark, got out and watched "The Bachelor." Did I tell you I am a closet, hopeless romantic and that this program feeds that need? I know, WEIRD!

Tuesday: I am still wallowing in sadness for my friend's loss. I found simple basic happiness in walking around outside feeling more warmth than I have been feeling due to the bright day and mild temperature. There is hope in Spring.

Wednesday: I though this was going to be easy because I think I am a very balanced happy person. The death of someone you know, who is your age leaves us at a loss as to how we should act and feel. I am experiencing this grief and feeling for my friend. Today, I thought about how lucky I am to be healthy and alive.

Thursday: Last week, I decided to start volunteering again at the gallery. I have not been an active member since my 2 years as President ended March 09. I needed to pull back as I was very burned out. I was asked to be Craft Chairman and I said yes quickly. Tonight, I went to the gallery and started by looking at it through critical eyes. It felt really good to be back even though there is a lot of work to be done to help improve the merchandising of the gallery. I am up to the challenge and look forward to it.

Friday: Today I felt happiness and pride when looking at the store all decked out in Valentine's Day. I have a lot of cards in the shop and they have been selling well. I have been working hard on trying to make it look better and I feel it is paying off. I had to work the sales desk for several hours the other day and I was able to watch shoppers shop the card wall. I never said anything to the people and 3 came up with 2 of my cards while I was there. I actually pulled cards from the gallery and brought them this am to the store since they were selling so well.

Saturday: This morning, I am grateful for the natural gift of sleeping well. So many friends tell me they have sleep issues. I love to sleep. I love my cozy bed. One of the things I bought myself from the proceeds from my December show was a couple new duvet covers and a set of sheets. Generally, when I am looking for something specific like this I tend to go on EBay and search by size and even color and find plenty to choose from. The only problem with this is that I tend to get more than one! Do I have an issue with can't choose? No, I don't. I am very decisive--I guess I choose more than one regularly.

Sunday: I love weekends. What more can I say. Even if i simply stay home and play all weekend which is what I am doing this weekend. I feel so productive writing a To Do list and then crossing each thing off. I got a lot accomplished this weekend. I listed ads on Craigslist for a roommate, to sell a Persian Rug, some designer scarves and a TV. Today's major item is to get myself ready to do my taxes. I have been doing the accountant or HR Block since 1999 when I first moved to Portland. This year I decided to save money and buy Turbo tax. I am a little scared but I know that I can do it. I hope to get back in the studio at sometime today.

Signing off week two.

What made me HAPPY WEEK 1

The raccoons in September

The 4 rockettes in September-- and now there is only one "baby"

I decided as a New Year's Resolution, that I would try to be more cognizant of what makes me happy. I feel that I have a lot in my life which makes me happy, but that I find that sometimes there is something inherently missing. I have decided that to dwell on the good might just overcome the not so good. So on Sundays, I will post a list by day of what made me happy. It is my intent to list things daily and keep a draft until the weekend. So here it goes...

Monday: Ok, I know this sounds crazy, but TV made me happy. I watched the first segment of "Emma" (Jane Austen) on Masterpiece Classic. I got a call from a new friend and talked for 2.5 hours. Very interesting!

Tuesday: I wore a new jacket that I bought in market last weekend in the cash and carry area. I had seen them in August at the last show and had thought about them since. Isn't it a great feeling when we have something new that we really like?

Wednesday: Just before I went to work, I looked out the window onto my deck and there were the two raccoons eating bread I had left out there for the birds. I love to watch the birds in the backyard. Have you noticed that it's staying light longer??? Spring is coming. I have been thinking about cleaning up my yard, but it's just too cold. This too will pass!

Thursday: Went out to dinner with an attractive and interesting man. I enjoyed myself a lot and hope he'll call me again.

Friday: While getting the store ready to open today, I ran across a book that must have been put out on Monday night. It is very intriguing to me and it has my name written all over it. "Rhett Butler's People" by Donald McCaig. The jacket says it is the Gone with the Wind story (and more) from Rhett's perspective. I can't wait to start it.

Saturday: I actually made dinner tonight. I also finished the book, "U is for Undertow" by Sue Grafton. It was a good one! Not many letters left. I've been reading this Kinsey Milhone detective series since "A is for Alibi." My friend, Margie, gave me the first one in my late 20's saying that the heroine is kind of like us. I always smile when I think of that.

Sunday: Today I spent the day reading the new book I found on Friday. It was almost decadent--just reading all day... I'm almost done. All three of the cats sat with me at different times during the day. What a life.

So there you have it. My first week!
